The term "gentrification" in the Oxford dictionary means "the process whereby the character of a poor urban area is changed by wealthier people moving in, improving housing, and attracting new businesses, typically displacing current inhabitants in the process."
The actions taken toward Newburgh are classified as gentrification because of this exact description. The historical and highly minority-populated community has been uprooted by real estate companies, economic disparities, and new wealthier residents. The city's leaders and community members have recognized these changes and are combating them with positive reinforcements.
